It is a procedure or method followed to find and measure the effect of external forces on the physical objects like built structure elements. It is used to forecast the behavior of structure upon loads acting on them. Design of element sizes, material to be used for structural elements is done on the basis of Structural Analysis.

Analysis is done, once visualizing the structural behavior under different types of loading. The structure should be capable to survive the loading minus any excessive deformation and internal stresses more than resisting capacity of elements.

Methods used for Structural Analysis depends on the type of element under study. Trusses are axial elements (resisting axial forces), which can be analyzed using method of joints, and method of sections.

The focus is mainly on the static indeterminacy, as they directly govern the strength criteria in design. Therefore, the analysis of structures is classified into two category namely statically determinate, and indeterminate analysis. Structural Analysis is critical because it can determine cause and predict failure – evaluating whether or not a specific structural design will be able to withstand the external and internal stresses and forces expected for the design.

Many structural tests, subjects are strain gaged and calibrated. This data is collected during complete structural and/or component testing, including during simplified tensile strength tests. Structural Analysis is then performed and, in some cases, correlated with the testing output data. This tactic produces an electronic virtual working model for future design development.

Modes of Structural Analysis

Structural Analysis is carried out by an examination of the real structure, on a model of the structure created on some scale, and by the utilization of mathematical models. Tests are conducted on the real structure when production is required of similar structures in large quantities, like frames of a particular car, or when the test expenses are acceptable due to the significance of the task. When elements of the main structures are to be examined, then models are used for the estimation of the different loads to be endured. Most structural analyses are conducted on the mathematical models, in which the model could be elastic or inelastic, forces may be static or dynamic, and the model of the structure might be two dimensional or three dimensional.
