With BIM you have multiple stakeholders working on different disciplines. An Architect may work with a team of Architects & Engineers to complete the Architectural Model. Likewise for Structural & MEP Models. During the design stage we may not get to see many errors pop up in individual models.
When all the different models are grouped to form a single BIM Model, that is where most of the clashes happen between Service to Service, discipline to discipline etc.
